Comparisons with the competition and trying one up them causes even more pain. The cause for this is the fear of rejection, which prevents us from trying new things. Previous stressful events might have reinforced low self-esteem. The way to fix it is to get into environments that promote learning opportunities, have clear guidelines for assertive communication.
